If you run a commercial kitchen, you’ll know that making delicious food is equal parts art and science. The same goes for cleaning the kitchen after a long day. We’ll leave the art of cleaning to you, and you can leave the science of testing your sanitizers to our range of sanitizer test strips.
Why do I need sanitizer test strips?
The last thing any restaurant owner wants to hear is that one of their customers became ill after eating at their restaurant. That’s why it’s so important to use an effective food equipment sanitizer, and regularly test it to ensure its effectiveness. Sanitizers are used to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi that may be harmful to your customers.
Ammonium-based sanitizers like Steramine and chlorine-based sanitizers like Stera-Sheen Green Label usually come in powder or tablet form, and are mixed with warm water to create a cleaning solution. But how can you be sure that you’ve mixed the sanitizer correctly and to FDA standards, or that you haven’t used too much? That’s where sanitizer test strips come in.
Test strips tell you instantly whether the concentration of the sanitizer strong is enough to kill bacteria, viruses, and fungi, or if it’s too strong, which may result in damage to your valuable equipment.
How do sanitizer test strips work?
Test strips are pieces of paper that are designed to react to different chemicals. To use a sanitizer test strip, simply dip the paper into the solution. The paper will react by changing color, and you can compare the color to a reference chart to determine whether the sanitizing solution is too weak, too strong, or just right.
What types of sanitizer test strips are available?
There are three types of sanitizer testing strips available:
- Ammonium QR5 test strips are used with products like Steramine quaternary sanitizing tablets.
- Chlorine test strips are used with chlorine-based sanitizers like Stera-Sheen Green Label, which is designed specifically for use on food contact surfaces.
- QUAT test strips are also used with quaternary ammonium sanitizer solutions.
The type of test strip you use depends on the type of sanitizer you want to test. Remember not to get them mixed up, because each reacts to different chemical compounds so you may not get an accurate reading.
